Best Time to Visit Chicago

May and June hit the sweet spot before peak summer: temperatures are in the 60s–70s°F, the lakefront is open, and festivals start filling the calendar. Hotel rates are still reasonable. September is equally excellent — summer warmth lingers, crowds drop as school resumes, and the city's outdoor event season wraps up with Chicago Jazz Fest and the Chicago Air & Water Show. Winter (December–February) is genuinely cold but offers the lowest hotel rates and a surprisingly lively indoor scene — world-class museums, deep-dish pizza, and excellent theater.

Top Attractions in Chicago

Chicago overdelivers on things to do — and much of the best of it is free or surprisingly affordable.

• Millennium Park & Cloud Gate: The Bean is unavoidable — and genuinely worth it. Millennium Park itself is free to enter and one of the best urban parks in America. The Frank Gehry Pritzker Pavilion stages free summer concerts.
• Navy Pier: A mile-long entertainment pier on Lake Michigan. The Ferris wheel, the IMAX theater, and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater are the highlights. The fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday nights in summer are free.
• The Art Institute of Chicago: One of the world's great art museums. Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and Grant Wood's American Gothic are here. Budget at least 3 hours.
• Willis Tower Skydeck: The glass-floored Ledge observation boxes at 103 floors up are genuinely thrilling. Go at sunset for the best light over Lake Michigan.
• Chicago Riverwalk: The 1.25-mile walkway along the Chicago River is one of the best urban waterfront promenades in the US. Architecture boat tours depart from here — a must-do.
• Deep-dish pizza: The eternal debate — Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, and Pequod's are the serious contenders. Go to Pequod's for the caramelized crust edge if you visit only one.

Chicago Neighborhoods: Where to Stay

Chicago is a city of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character:

• The Loop & River North: Downtown Chicago — the most central and most expensive. Walking distance to Millennium Park, the Art Institute, and the Riverwalk.
• Magnificent Mile (Streeterville/Gold Coast):Chicago's upscale shopping street on Michigan Avenue. Hotels here are premium but the location is unbeatable for first-time visitors.
• Wicker Park / Bucktown: Chicago's arts and nightlife district — great restaurant scene, independent shops, and more affordable hotels than downtown.
• Hyde Park: Home to the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry. More residential, lower hotel rates, and genuinely interesting architecture.

Where to Eat in Chicago

Chicago's food scene is far more than deep-dish pizza — though the pizza is excellent. The city has a serious Michelin-starred restaurant culture and some of the best tacos, Polish food, and Vietnamese cooking outside their home countries.

• The Purple Pig on Michigan Avenue — Mediterranean small plates, serious wine list, no reservations. Always worth the wait.
• Gene & Georgetti — The oldest steakhouse in Chicago (opened 1941). Old-school atmosphere, exceptional prime beef.
• Pilsen — Chicago's Mexican-American neighborhood has some of the best tacos, tamales, and aguas frescas in the city. 5th Street is the main drag.
• Portillo's — Chicago's fast-food institution. Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers and giardiniera, dipped in the jus. Get it at the original River North location.
